Professor William van Nostrand is the Co-Director for the George & Anne Ryan Institute for Neuroscience, and Herrmann Professor of Neuroscience at the Department of Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences, The University of Rhode Island.

His research focuses on the pathogenesis of cerebral amyloid angiopathy, cerebral small vessel disease and Alzheimer’s disease using biochemical, molecular, cellular and animal model approaches. To this end, his research groups have generated novel transgenic and knock in rat models of disease that provide new opportunities to investigate these conditions using life-style, imaging and cognitive testing approaches.

Professor van Nostrand has been awarded the National Insitute of Health (NIH) grants for the following research projects:

  • A therapeutic target for cerebral amyloid angiopathy (project period:  9/19-8/21, role: co-PI)
  • Structural Identification and Functional Consequences of Different Amyloid Strains in Alzheimer's Disease (project period:  9/18-5/23, role: co-PI)
  • Cerebral amyloid angiopathy fluid biomarkers evaluation (CAFE) (project period:  7/18-6/23, role: PI)
  • Role of copper in cerebral amyloid angiopathy (project period:  7/16-6/21, role: PI)
  • Characterizing the glymphatic peri-vascular connectome and its disruption in AD (project period:  9/16-8/21, role: co-PI)
  • Understanding the origins of amyloid deposition in cerebral amyloid angiopathy (project period:  7/16-6/21, role: PI)
  • Structural markers for Alzheimer’s disease and cerebral amyloid angiopathy (project period:  8/16-7/21, role: co-PI)
