Dr Marija Sajic
Marija graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Belgrade. She completed her PhD degree at the University of London studying the role of CD8+ T cells in multiple sclerosis. In her postdoctoral work, Marija focused on the role of mitochondria in neuronal energy metabolism, and has developed a platform for studying mitochondrial function and dynamics in electrically active axons, in vivo. For this work on effect of impulse conduction on mitochondrial dynamics she received P.K. Thomas Award from Peripheral Nerve Society. Her current interest is in the effect of type 2 diabetes mellitus on mitochondrial and neuronal energy metabolism, brain vascularisation and brain perfusion. Within Leducq consortium, she is investigating the effects of hypertension and diabetes comorbidity on vascular changes in SHRSP model of small vessel disease.
